Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau (French, 1855-1931), "Soyez Gentils Avec Les Animaux" (Be Kind to Animals), circa 1880, oil on canvas, lined. Signed 'Chocarne-Moreau' at lower left. Plaque recto: 'Chocarne-Moreau, Soyez Gentils Avec Animaux.' M.S. Rau Antiques label verso. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 31 1/2" H x 38 3/4" W, canvas: 32 3/8" H x 39 5/8" W]. Chocarne-Moreau studied under Bouguereau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became a highly celebrated French genre painter. He often depicted anecdotal, humorous scenes of Parisian children in mischievous activities, with academic precision. Here he skillfully depicts altar boys being entertained by rambunctiously interacting with a parrot. One boy swings a censer filled with smoke which may have startled the parrot to have its wings up. The other boys smile to their amusement while one has his back turned looking into the next room. Notes: This lot includes M.S. Rau Antiques documents.
Canvas lined. Surface dust and dirt. Craquelure throughout. Gloss varnish. Visible inpaint throughout painting under UV/black light. Framed: 36 5/8" H x 44" W. Verso sealed with clear plexiglass. Ask Fine Arts Department for additional photos.
