Andrea Landini (Italian, 1847-1935), "Le Favori," oil on board. Signed 'A. Landini' at lower right. Plaque recto with artist last name and title. At verso, the board has a couple faded stamps. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 10 1/4" H x 8 1/4" W]. Le Favori features a seated cardinal with a small dog on his lap, next to a table topped with a silver tea service containing pastries, decanter and glass. Landini was a highly successful Italian painter celebrated for his meticulously detailed, humorous, and satirical oil paintings. While he began his career as an elite Florentine society portraitist, he achieved international fame by specializing in "Cardinal Paintings" - Catholic Cardinals and prelates surrounded by extreme, lavish luxury. The paintings were highly popular because they humorously mocked what many perceived as Church hypocrisy - lavish settings, champagne and liquor.
Surface dust. Craquelure throughout the painting. Frame abrasion at the lower right area. No visible inpaint under UV/black light. Framed: 16 7/8" H x 15" W.
