Karl Friedrich Schulz (German, 1796-1866), "A Scene from the Legend of St. Hubert," oil on metal. Signed 'F. Schulz, Wien 840' at lower right. Artist's name, titled, and artist's date on plaque recto. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 22 3/8" H x 28 5/8" W]. Schulz was a prominent 19th century German realist painter and professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts. He is most widely celebrated for his military, marine, and hunting scenes. Here, he portrays St. Hubert, Bishop of Liege who became the patron saint of hunters, as he stands outside the doorway of a cottage in a wooded area. Several horsemen and their hounds are pursuing a deer, which is standing next to St. Hubert, seeking his protection.
Surface dust. Craquelure. Minor varnish age. Abrasions on the painting, mostly the upper areas. Frame abrasions. Visible inpaint under UV/black light. Gilt neoclassical style pediment frame that has weight. Framed: 40 5/8" H x 43 1/4" W. Ask Fine Arts Department for additional photos.

Sale: Sotheby's London, May 30, 1975; Daniel M. (Wygold) Mitchell Estate. Mr. Mitchell was a Naval Officer and an entrepreneur. Serendipitously, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mitchell transferred to the Naval Reserve where he joined VR-872 – a Navel transport squadron out of the Alameda Naval Air Station that Michaan’s is located on now. He and his wife, Paris, loved to travel and made it a point to travel to Paris twice a year, and always brought back beautiful and interesting items. His collection covers the spectrum from noted painters to a variety of Empire and Empire Style Gilt Bronze Figural clocks, marble and bronze sculptures, bronze and gilt brass urns, and complex models of military ships and aircraft.
