Henry Perronet Briggs (British, 1792-1844), Portrait of Admiral Henry John Rous, circa 1830, oil on canvas, lined. Unsigned. Plaque recto: 'Henry Perronet Briggs (1791-1844), Adm. Henry J. Rous 1795-1877.' Labels verso including one from The Woodshield Gallery LLC. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 31 3/8" H x 25 7/8" W, canvas: 31 7/8" H x 26 7/8" W]. Although Rous is noted as admiral in the title, he did not achieve his admiralty rank until 1863. His age and uniform in this picture suggest it was painted during his time as naval captain, from 1825-1835. After beginning as a portraitist, Briggs forged a career as a historical painter, working in the style of Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). For the final ten years of his life, however, he returned to portrait painting. From 1814 until his death, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution.

Canvas lined. Surface dust and dirt, craquelure throughout, and abrasions including to frame. Visible inpaint under Uv/black light on the Admiral. At verso, dirt pockets and partially sealed with foam board. In a gilt ornate frame that shows wear. Framed: 41 1/4" H x 35 3/4" W. Ask Fine Arts Department for additional photos.
