John James Halls (British, 1776-1834), Portrait of Vice Admiral Sir William H. Essington, KCG, oil on canvas, lined. Unsigned. On plaque recto: 'Vice Admiral Sir William H. Essington, K.C.B., Captain of H. M L. "Triumph" at the Battle of Camperdown, 1797, Portrait by J.J. Hall Exht. in the Royal Academy 1809.' At verso, 'Vice Admiral Sir William H. Essington 1753-1816' on plaque and Colin Denny Ltd, London label. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 29 3/8" H x 24 1/8" W, canvas: 30" H x 24 3/4" W]. Vice Admiral Sir William H. Essington, K.C.B. (1753-1816) was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy in February, 1777, and by 1783, he had attained the rank of Captain. He commanded in the French Revolutionary Wars, and against the Dutch and Danish throughout the 1790s, with subsequent promotions leading to Vice Admiral. In January 1815, Essington was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.). He died the next year at the age of sixty-three.

Canvas lined, brown cloth covers the canvas verso. Surface dust and minor dirt. Gloss varnish with minor aging. Craquelure throughout. No visible inpainting. Minor dirt pockets verso. Framed: 36 3/4" H x 31 3/4" W.

(Wygold) Mitchell Estate. Mr. Mitchell was a Naval Officer and an entrepreneur. Serendipitously, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mitchell transferred to the Naval Reserve where he joined VR-872 – a Navel transport squadron out of the Alameda Naval Air Station that Michaan’s is located on now. He and his wife, Paris, loved to travel and made it a point to travel to Paris twice a year, and always brought back beautiful and interesting items. His collection covers the spectrum from noted painters to a variety of Empire and Empire Style Gilt Bronze Figural clocks, marble and bronze sculptures, bronze and gilt brass urns, and complex models of military ships and aircraft.
