Japanese Meiji Bronze Censer with Lion-Form Handles and Dragon Decoration.
The censer of globular form raised on three slender legs, the body cast in relief with a sinuous dragon amid clouds, flanked by a pair of lion-form handles modeled in high relief, the neck with a stepped rim, the surface of rich dark brown patina. The dynamic interplay between the dragon and guardian figures reflects a decorative vocabulary associated with protection and auspicious power, characteristic of Meiji-period metalwork.
