Hiroshi Yoshida stands among the most celebrated figures of the shin hanga (“new prints”) movement of early twentieth-century Japan. Originally trained as a Western-style painter, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, developing a unique artistic vision that combined traditional Japanese woodblock printing with Western approaches to light, atmosphere, and natural observation. In 1925, Yoshida established his own workshop, personally supervising every stage of production—from carving and printing to color selection—in pursuit of the highest artistic standards. Prints bearing special seals are particularly valued as evidence of the artist’s direct involvement in the printing process.
Glittering Sea is one of the finest works from Yoshida’s celebrated Seto Inland Sea Series. The composition depicts several sailing boats quietly traversing the tranquil waters of the Inland Sea. Arranged across the picture plane with careful balance, the vessels appear suspended upon a vast expanse of shimmering blue water. Their sails, rendered in subtle shades of violet and brown, catch the soft light of the sky, while delicate reflections ripple beneath them. Above, the horizon dissolves into a luminous band of golden light, suggesting either the first glow of dawn or the fading radiance of evening.
The Seto Inland Sea has long occupied a special place in Japanese cultural imagination as both a vital maritime route and a landscape of exceptional natural beauty. Rather than emphasizing a specific geographic location, Yoshida focuses on the fleeting effects of light upon water. Inspired in part by Impressionist explorations of changing atmospheric conditions, he masterfully captures the subtle interplay of sea, sky, and reflected light. Through the meticulous layering of transparent pigments and the precise registration of multiple woodblocks, he achieves an extraordinary sense of luminosity and depth, creating an image that possesses the delicacy of a watercolor while retaining the richness and clarity unique to woodblock printing.
The Seto Inland Sea Series is widely regarded as one of the crowning achievements of Yoshida’s mature career. Compared with his celebrated views of foreign landscapes and world monuments, these scenes reveal a more intimate engagement with the natural beauty of Japan itself. In Glittering Sea, the artist transforms a simple maritime scene into a meditation on light, atmosphere, and stillness, demonstrating the remarkable synthesis of Eastern and Western artistic traditions that defines his work.
This impression retains the artist’s pencil signature and title in the lower margin. The image bears the red Yoshida seal at lower right and the rare “Toku” seal at upper left, indicating a high-quality lifetime impression produced under the artist’s direct supervision. Such impressions are especially prized by collectors and institutions for their superior printing quality and their close connection to Yoshida’s artistic intentions.

吉田博は、20世紀前半の日本における新版画運動を代表する画家の一人である。洋画家として出発した彼は、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、アジア、アフリカなど世界各地を旅し、西洋絵画における光や空気表現への関心と、日本伝統の木版画技法を融合させた独自の芸術世界を築き上げた。1925年以降は自らの版画工房を設立し、彫師や摺師を統率しながら制作工程全体を厳格に監督した。作品に押された特別な印章は、制作に対する彼自身の深い関与と高い品質管理を示すものとして知られている。
本作《光る海》は、吉田博の代表作として名高い《瀬戸内海集》の一図である。画面には、瀬戸内海の穏やかな海原を静かに進む数艘の帆船が描かれている。遠近に配された船影は広々とした青い海面に浮かび、紫褐色を帯びた帆が柔らかな光を受けて静かに輝く。海面には繊細な波紋と反射が表され、船の影がゆるやかに揺らめきながら、水面に豊かなリズムを生み出している。遠くの水平線には淡い金色の光が広がり、夜明けあるいは夕暮れの一瞬を思わせる静謐な情景が展開される。
瀬戸内海は古くから日本の重要な海上交通路であり、多くの詩人や画家によって讃えられてきた景勝地でもある。しかし吉田は、特定の名所を描写することよりも、水面に映る光の変化や大気の移ろいに関心を向けている。印象派絵画にも通じる光への鋭い観察眼をもって、海と空、そして反射する光の繊細な関係を描き出した。透明感のある色彩を幾重にも摺り重ねることで、水彩画を思わせる柔らかな空気感と奥行きを実現し、木版画ならではの豊かな色彩表現と見事に融合させている。
《瀬戸内海集》は、吉田博円熟期の代表的な連作として高く評価されている。海外の名勝や世界各地の風景を描いた作品群と比べても、本シリーズは日本の自然への深い愛着と理解をより強く示している。《光る海》は、光と大気の表現を通じて、瀬戸内海の穏やかで詩情あふれる美しさを描き出した傑作であり、東西の芸術的要素を融合させた吉田博芸術の真髄をよく示している。
本作品には、下部余白に鉛筆による自筆署名および題名が残されている。画面右下には「吉田」の朱印、左上には「特」印が捺されており、吉田博自身の厳格な監督のもとで制作された優れた摺りであることを示している。このような生前摺りの作品は、その優れた保存状態と高い芸術的完成度から、美術館やコレクターの間で特に高く評価されている。
