Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950)
Sailing Boats – Mist, from the series Seto Naikai shu (Inland Sea Series), 1926.
Woodblock print, pencil-signed and titled in the lower margin, bearing the artist’s seals.
Hiroshi Yoshida is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the Shin Hanga (“New Prints”) movement in twentieth-century Japan. Trained as a Western-style painter, he traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, India, and China, incorporating Western concepts of light, atmosphere, and perspective into the traditional medium of Japanese woodblock printing. His innovative synthesis of Eastern and Western artistic traditions earned him international acclaim and established him as one of Japan’s most influential printmakers.
Published in 1926, Sailing Boats – Mist belongs to Yoshida’s celebrated Seto Inland Sea Series, a group of prints depicting the tranquil coastal landscapes of western Japan. The composition portrays traditional sailing vessels gliding silently across calm waters veiled in morning mist. Soft gradations of blue and gray create a delicate atmospheric effect, while the reflections shimmering beneath the boats lend the scene a remarkable sense of serenity and depth.
Unlike many earlier ukiyo-e artists who focused on narrative or figure subjects, Yoshida was deeply interested in the changing effects of light, weather, and mood in nature. Here, the subtle interplay between mist, water, and sail demonstrates his mastery of atmospheric landscape, combining the observational qualities of Western painting with the refined techniques of Japanese woodblock printing.
This impression bears the artist’s pencil signature and title, together with the red Yoshida seal and the desirable toku (“special”) seal, indicating a superior-quality impression produced during the artist’s lifetime. Such early impressions remain highly sought after by collectors and are regarded among the finest achievements of the Shin Hanga movement.

(Sailing Boats – Mist)
