Framed Edwin M. Stanton, Letter written March 5, 1842, to William M. Tilghman of Philadelphia, probably the William M. Tilghman whose father was Chielf United States Circuit Judge of the US Circuit Court for the Third Circuit and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania for decades. 

In the letter, Stanton advises Tilghman to ask the advice of another attorney, regarding a matter of new trial, and related findings.

Edwin McMasters Stanton (1814 - 1869), Secretary of War, Lincoln Administration, and continued as same for most of the Johnson Administration. Nominated and confirmed as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Stanton died before he could be sworn in.

Under glass and mat, with engraving of Stanton to right of the letter. 

COA to back from Heritage Collectors Society.

Very good condition, some toning to letter, print, and mat.
