Benjamin F. Butler, Letter. Butler wrote on January 27, 1866 to tell Charles H. Crane that he would send to Crane a copy of one of his speeches as soon as he could get one from his home in Lowell, Massachusetts, and to say he (Butler) did not know of a letter Crane referred to, written to a Mr. Dickinson. Crane was one of the surgeons who attended to Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated.

Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818 - 1893), General, Civil War, also known as Beast Butler, one of the primary members of the House of Representatives to seek the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, repeatedly; proposed a Civil Rights Amendment in 1871; became Governor of Massachusetts, 1882, appointed Clara Barton to first female to hold post of Massachusetts Reformatory for Women; ran for President in 1884.

Good condition, frame and glass with minor surface wear and scratches.
