Republican period map, Detailed Map of Guangdong Province (广东全省明细大地图), early 20th century, printed by The China Publishing & Printing Co., Ltd., 21 Foochow Road, Shanghai, presenting a comprehensive geographic survey of Guangdong, including key counties and port regions along the Pearl River Delta. Beyond its cartographic function, the map holds profound historical and cultural significance as a visual record of the homeland from which large waves of overseas Chinese migration originated. Regions such as Taishan, Kaiping, Xinhui, Panyu, and Xiangshan (Zhongshan), prominently marked on the map, were among the principal points of departure for emigrants who left southern China for North America and beyond.

From these coastal counties, generations of migrants crossed the Pacific and became integral to the early development of the American West, particularly in California, where they labored in gold mining camps, railroad construction, laundries, restaurants, and the formation of Chinatowns. Their journeys were marked by hardship, exclusion, and discrimination, yet also by resilience and determination, laying the social and economic foundations for later Chinese communities abroad. This map thus serves not only as a geographic document but also as a poignant testament to the origins of the Chinese diaspora and the enduring connections between Guangdong and overseas Chinese history. Well-preserved, with clear printing and strong visual legibility. {Image size: 40 x 45 1/8 inches}.
