Hai Lou's Four Rubbings of Bamboo Painting, late Qing dynasty, after earlier classical models, each panel inscribed with poetic text, including the phrase “摇曳多姿柔济刚” (“Swaying in graceful and varied forms, where suppleness tempers inner strength”), capturing the expressive and symbolic qualities of bamboo. These works, executed as ink rubbings, faithfully preserve the compositional structure, carving technique, and aesthetic spirit of the original bamboo engravings, serving both as artistic renderings and documentary records of the source material. Through the medium of rubbing, the refined artistry of bamboo carving is translated into a form that allows for wider dissemination and scholarly appreciation.

The imagery of bamboo, long celebrated in Chinese art, is here rendered with dynamic vitality, the swaying forms suggesting movement and grace, while embodying the enduring ideal of “softness overcoming hardness.” This duality reflects a core aesthetic and moral principle in literati culture, where bamboo symbolizes resilience, integrity, and inner strength beneath an outward flexibility. Though created through carving rather than brush, the works maintain a strong calligraphic sensibility, uniting the rhythmic qualities of line with the tactile presence of engraved surfaces, and echoing the traditions of the Zhejiang school with its emphasis on literati refinement and a subtle, archaic character.

The inscription “Hailou after the ancients” (海楼仿古) further situates these works within the long-standing Chinese practice of studying and reinterpreting earlier masters. Such engagement with tradition is not merely imitative but represents a conscious dialogue with the past, through which artists absorb, transform, and renew established forms. As a set, these four panels embody the continuity of bamboo imagery across mediums and generations, expressing both reverence for classical ideals and the enduring vitality of this subject within Chinese artistic culture.  {Image size: 56 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches}.

Overall condition is fair to good, with noticeable age-related wear. Two of the four panels are missing their upper mounting rods, and therefore cannot currently be hung. There are scattered areas of loss and minor damage throughout the surfaces, consistent with age and handling. In addition, certain areas show evidence of later intervention, with applied ink additions likely intended to visually compensate for areas of wear. Despite these issues, the panels remain stable and retain their overall visual coherence. For condition report, please contact the Asian Art Department.
