Circle of John Singleton Copley (American, 1738-1815), 18th Century Portrait of Governor Thomas Pownall (1722-1805), oil on canvas. Unsigned. Plaque recto: 'Governor Thomas Pownall, John S. Copley, R.A. 1737-1815.' Antique labels affixed to back covering and top stretcher bar. This portrait was attributed to John Singleton Copley by Albert Rosenthal in 1931, but subsequent scholarship determined that is not the case (by repute). Pownall, a British politician and colonial official, served as governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1757 to 1760 and afterward served in the British Parliament. Notes: This lot includes pieces of a label from verso.

Canvas lined. Surface dust and dirt including varnish again. Craquelure throughout the painting. Frame abrasions. Visible inpaint under UV/black light particularly on the Governor's chest and left area. At verso, minor dirt pockets and sealed with cardboard. Gilt frame showing wear and some loses of plaster. Framed: 38" H x 33" W. Ask Fine Art Department for additional photos.
