British School (early 20th Century), Portrait of an English Army Officer, circa 1905, oil on board. Unsigned. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 11" H x 6 5/8" W, board: 11 1/2" H x 7 1/4" W]. This anonymous portrait depicts an officer of the Leicestershire Regiment (17th Foot), in Victorian full dress uniform, wearing a red tunic, holding a blue cloth helmet in one hand, and white gloves in the other. The officer appears to wear a Queen's South Africa medal with three clasps, and if so, this was likely painted after the Second Boer War (1899-1902).

Minor surface dust. Gloss varnished with some aging. Some surface abrasions including frame abrasions. Craquelure throughout the painting. Under UV/black light, visible inpainting of the background at top left corner to top center area, left center side, right center side. The right center side shows small dots when UV light is on. At verso, new hardware installed to hold up board in frame. Frame has minor wear, framed: 20 1/2" H x 16 1/8" W. Ask  Fine Art Department for additional photos.

(Wygold) Mitchell Estate.  Mr. Mitchell was a Naval Officer and an entrepreneur.  Serendipitously, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mitchell transferred to the Naval Reserve where he joined VR-872 – a Navel transport squadron out of the Alameda Naval Air Station that Michaan’s is located on now.  He and his wife, Paris, loved to travel and made it a point to travel to Paris twice a year, and always brought back beautiful and interesting items.   His collection covers the spectrum from noted painters to precise metal aircraft and automobile models.  Michaan’s is honored to be offering this collection over the next four months.  The September collection includes artists Greg Gandy, Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau, Giulio Rosati, and Marcel Brunery to name a few.  Along with a variety of Empire and Empire Style Gilt Bronze Figural clocks, period military helmets, marble busts, bronze and gilt brass urns, and complex models of military ships and aircraft.
