Portrait of a Gentleman (18th Century), oil on lined canvas. Unsigned. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 29 1/2" H x 24 3/8" W; canvas: 30" H x 25 1/8" W]. This three-quarter length portrait depicts a gentleman in a powder gray wig typical of the mid-1700s. He dons a pale silver-gray coat with elaborate gold button loops, gilt buttons, and a red lining or waistcoat showing underneath. He appears to be holding a black tricorne or bicorne-type hat under his left arm. "712VA" is stenciled on the back right stretcher bar.

Canvas is lined. Surface dust and craquelure throughout painting. Under UV/black light, visible inpainting from the right side to the lower left. Inpaint on the background and on the gentleman in a speckled pattern. The painting is held within an ornate antique frame. The heavy outer perimeter is wrapped in a highly-detailed, relief-molded motif depicting alternating acanthus leaves, acorns and oak foliage. The innermost border is lined with a carved egg-and-dart repeating pattern and a fine string of beaded relief. Framed: 43" H x 38" W. Ask Fine Arts Department for additional photos.
