Circle of Sir William Beechey (English, 1752-1828), Portrait of a British Officer, Knight of the Garter, oil on lined canvas. Late 18th/early 19th-century. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 35 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W, canvas: 36 1/2" H x 28 3/8" W]. Notes: This lot includes a label of the artwork's information. Plaque recto reads "Thomas Beach (1738-1806), Duke of Montrose (1755-1836). The officer is shown half-length, wearing a red tunic with gold epaulettes and a green sash, his right hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He is depicted wearing the Order of the Garter medal, which James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose, reportedly did not receive until 1812, after Beach's death.

Canvas lined. Surface dust and craquelure throughout painting. Slight varnished age. Under UV/black light, visible inpainting at areas close to the frame, very minor areas on the officer's face and neck. Housed in a large, richly ornamented gilt 19th century Rococo-style frame, with acanthus-leaf and foliate scroll cartouches, shell and scrolling foliate ornament and appliquès. Framed: 49 3/8" H x 41" W.
