Portrait of a Gentleman in Ceremonial Armor, [possibly Count Volter Reinhold von Stackelberg (1705-1801), circa 1750], oil on canvas. Unsigned. [Approximate dimensions - sight: 29 1/4" H x 24 1/4" W]. This anonymous portrait strongly resembles Von Stackelberg, a Baltic-German noble and Swedish general who became a hereditary count in 1763. Born in Estonia, he had a long military career serving the Swedish crown and was part of the prominent Stackelberg family.

Canvas lined. Surface dust. Gloss varnished with some varnish aging. Craquelure throughout painting. Frame abrasions at the bottom area. Under UV/black light, visible inpainting along the edges, small amount on gentleman's face, and small areas of the background. At verso, dirt pockets and complete keys. Gilt frame that shows wear, framed: 38 3/4" H x 33 1/2" W.
