A Three-Legged Toad-Form Snuff Bottle. The toad maybe created in Ming Dynasty, and maybe made as the snuff bottle in early Qing Dynasty. {L 3 1/2 x W 2 3/4 x D 1 1/2 inches (bottle only}.

Provenance: From the collection of the distinguished San Francisco collector Irving Freedenberg, known as “Bill.”

Appraisal History: The present work was appraised on July 6, 1979, by Leonard Bowman, a fine arts appraiser active in San Francisco and Honolulu. Listed as Item 12 on page 3 of the appraisal, the work was identified at that time as dating to the “Late Han to Early Medieval Period” and assigned a replacement and insurable value of $2,000. The appraiser further stated: “Originally carved during the early Medieval Period, and the made into a table of Desk Snuff Bottle in the Late Ming Period.”

The present lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Antiquity, Lot No. 20, issued by Robert D. Thompson, a Hong Kong auctioneer, and dated October 25, 1975.

鉴定记录:本件作品曾于1979年7月6日由活跃于旧金山及火奴鲁鲁的艺术品鉴定师伦纳德·鲍曼(Leonard Bowman)鉴定。在该鉴定文件第三页第12项中,本作当时被鉴定为“汉代晚期至中世纪早期”的作品,重置及保险估值为2,000美元。该鉴定师进一步指出:“最初雕刻于中世纪早期,后于明代晚期改制为一件案头鼻烟壶。”

本件拍品另附一份由香港拍卖师Robert D. Thompson于1975年10月25日出具的古董证书(Certificate of Antiquity),证书编号为第20号。
