Two May Morris Attributed Textile Portiere or Curtain Panels, with John Henry Dearle as co designer, of pale blue silk damask woven with "Oak" pattern, embroidered in colored silk threads with fruit trees and smaller flowering shrubs entwined with a large veined leaf, the background worked with ivy and small flowerheads, the top worked in black silk with the inscription "All wrought by the worm in the peasant carle's cot on the mulberry leafage when the summer was hot", lined and interlined (added later), worn, designed by Henry Dearle and May Morris, circa 1890."

Mary (May) Morris ( English, 1862 -1938), studied embroidery at The South Kensington School of Design, and became head designer and stylist of Morris and Company's  embroidery department in 1885. May's designs incorporated the same British Arts and Crafts and Pre-Raphaelite, Renaissance influenced designs as her father, William Morris, albeit in a different medium. In 1907, May founded the Women's Guild of Arts.

{Approximate dimensions: 115" x 59".}.

The silk damask is shattered, with subsequent losses. Minor loose threads. The color of the wools is still vibrant. Please note that we are happy to take additional photographs and / or do a Facetime Video, at the request of potential bidders.
