Three Japanese Woodblock Prints.
Color woodblock prints on paper, including Aigasa by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting elegantly dressed figures sharing an umbrella in a refined example of early ukiyo-e bijin-ga, characterized by delicate line, soft coloration, and an emphasis on intimate human interaction; a portrait of a beauty by Shimura Tatsumi, rendered with simplified forms and a restrained palette, emphasizing grace, modern sensibility, and the expressive potential of minimal composition; and Mandarin Ducks by Ohara Koson, portraying a pair of ducks gliding beneath overhanging branches, executed with subtle gradations and careful attention to natural detail, reflecting the shin-hanga movement’s focus on atmosphere and seasonal observation.
