Four Japanese Woodblock Prints.
Color woodblock prints on paper, including two horse studies by Urushibara Mokuchu (1888–1953) and two floral compositions by Ohno Bakufu (1888–1976), each signed by the artist. The Mokuchu prints depict horses in dynamic poses, rendered with highly economical brushwork, where bold, calligraphic lines capture musculature, movement, and spirit with remarkable immediacy, reflecting the artist’s mastery in conveying vitality through minimal means. The Bakufu prints, titled Flower Arrangement with Iris and Seasonal Blossoms and Basket with Roses and Orchids, present carefully composed still-life arrangements, in which selective keyblock outlines and softly diffused color application create gentle transitions and atmospheric depth; the use of subtle gradation and controlled bleeding of pigments enhances the sense of volume and texture, characteristic of shin-hanga aesthetics. Together, the group demonstrates a compelling contrast between expressive monochrome linearity and refined polychrome design, highlighting two complementary approaches to modern Japanese printmaking.
{Approximate dimensions: Mokuchu (horizontal) H 9 1/8 inches x W 13 3/8 inches (23.2 x 34 cm); Mokuchu (vertical) H 13 3/8 inches x W 9 1/8 inches (34 x 23.2 cm); Bakufu prints approximately H 15 inches x W 10–10 1/8 inches (38.1 x 25.4–25.7 cm)}
