Three Japanese Garments, Meiji to early 20th century, comprising one woman’s silk kimono and two men’s garments, including a striped cotton under-robe (juban) and a blue indigo-dyed cotton outer garment. The central red kimono is finely woven silk, richly decorated with floral and auspicious motifs in vibrant colors, many highlighted with gold-wrapped threads, creating an especially ornate and luxurious effect. In contrast, the men’s garments are more subdued in palette and material, reflecting traditional distinctions in use and gender. Together, the group exemplifies the refinement and diversity of Japanese textile craftsmanship of the period.

Red kimono: 67 x 51 inches.
