Pair of Japanese Shokudai Bronze Candle Stands, mid-19th century (Edo to early Meiji period), exemplifying the refined artistry of traditional Japanese metalwork. Each stand features a tall, slender upright supported by a broad circular tray base designed to catch dripping wax, combining functional design with elegant proportions. The stems rise from gently curved feet, lending stability and visual balance, while a pricket emerges from a shallow dish at the top—an essential characteristic of Shokudai construction. Both retain hanging tassel ornaments, adding a subtle decorative accent to their otherwise restrained form.
The surfaces display a rich, warm bronze patina developed over time, enhancing their historical presence and authenticity. Such candle stands were used in both domestic and ceremonial contexts, reflecting the understated aesthetic and craftsmanship valued in Japanese decorative arts.
Well preserved, with consistent patina and strong structural integrity. {Approximate dimensions: each 27 inches high x 9 1/2 inches diameter}.
