Sun Yunsheng (Jiarui, 1918–2000), Matted Painting of a Bird in Dunhuang Style

Ink and color on paper, matted.

The painting depicts a single bird rendered in a highly stylized manner, strongly influenced by the aesthetic of Dunhuang mural traditions. Executed in vivid mineral pigments of turquoise, red, and blue, the composition emphasizes bold contour lines and flat areas of color, recalling the decorative and rhythmic qualities of wall painting. The surrounding border is intricately hand-painted with continuous scrolling floral motifs, closely imitating textile patterns yet entirely executed by brush, enhancing the ornamental richness of the work. As a student of Zhang Daqian, Sun Yunsheng absorbed his teacher’s deep engagement with Dunhuang art, and this influence is evident in both palette and technique. The painting bears two seals, including “Sun Yunsheng,” and an additional collector’s seal reading “Wen Shan xin shang,” indicating it was formerly in the collection of the noted collector Wang Wenshan (王闻善), who maintained a close relationship with Zhang Daqian. The inscription records that the work was presented as a wedding gift: “Respectfully offered in congratulations for the marriage of Chengyan’s son Zhongjin,” dated to the ninth month of the jiachen year (1964), signed “Yunsheng, your younger brother, Sun Jiarui.” The overall composition reflects a synthesis of traditional literati painting and Dunhuang-inspired decorative style.

{Approximate dimensions: Sight: H 12 5/8 inches x W 16 inches (32.1 x 40.6 cm); Overall (matted): H 16 1/2 inches x W 19 3/4 inches (41.9 x 50.2 cm)}
