Shoji Hamada (1894–1978): Glazed Stoneware Bowl.

The shallow bowl of rounded form with gently flaring rim, covered in a rich, variegated glaze in warm iron and earthy tones, accented with expressive brushwork and natural kiln effects. The surface displays a spontaneous yet controlled aesthetic, with asymmetry and tonal variation that reflect the principles of the mingei (folk craft) movement, of which Hamada was a leading figure. As a designated Living National Treasure, Hamada emphasized the beauty of functional objects, allowing the inherent qualities of clay, glaze, and firing to guide the final result. The bowl embodies a balance between utility and artistry, its form modest and unpretentious, yet enriched by subtle surface complexity and depth. The interaction of glaze and firing produces organic variations that resist uniformity, reinforcing the philosophy of handmade individuality central to Hamada’s practice. Works such as this demonstrate his enduring influence on both Japanese and Western studio pottery, bridging traditional craft techniques with a modern appreciation for material authenticity and quiet elegance.
