Ōshima Joun (1858–1940): Japanese Bronze Vase with Crab.
The vase of elongated pear-shaped form with a slender neck rising from a rounded body to a small mouth, cast in bronze with a rich, warm brown patina, the surface applied in high relief with a naturalistically rendered crab climbing upward along the body, its articulated legs and textured shell contrasting with the smooth curvature of the vessel. The restrained composition emphasizes asymmetry and negative space, allowing the sculptural presence of the crab to animate the otherwise elegant and continuous silhouette. The base inscribed with the two-character mark “Joun” (如云), corresponding to the artist’s name. Ōshima Joun, a prominent metal artist of the Meiji period and professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, was renowned for his technical mastery in bronze casting and his ability to merge naturalistic observation with refined design. In this work, the subtle integration of decorative motif and vessel form reflects a sophisticated balance between sculpture and functional object, characteristic of high-quality Meiji metalwork intended for both domestic appreciation and international exhibition.
