Philip van Dijk (Dutch, 1683-1753), Portrait of a Cavalry Officer, 1741, oil on panel. Signed 'P. van Dijk' and dated at upper right. Plaque recto with name, title, and artist's date. Label verso with inscription of artist's name and date and possibly 'Bulwer(k?) Collection.' [Approximate dimensions - panel: 17" H x 13 3/4" W]. Painter and art dealer Van Dijk served as advisor to Willem IV and was active in the Hague during 1741, suggesting the sitter here may have been a senior military officer or related to the Orange court. The helmet, and battle and command imagery are consistent with other portraits by Van Dijk from this period.

Surface dust and dirt. Gloss varnished with varnished aging. Abrasions at the top right area, bottom right, and frame abrasions. Panel cracked at the bottom right corner. Under UV/black light, very minor visible inpainting at the top right corner, bottom left side by the frame. Gilt frame shows wear including minor plaster and gilt loss, cracking especially at miter joints. Framed: 23 1/8" H x 19 7/8" W. At verso, new hardware installed to secure panel in frame. Ask Fine Art Department for additional photos.

Daniel M. (Wygold) Mitchell Estate.  Mr. Mitchell was a Naval Officer and an entrepreneur.  Serendipitously, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mitchell transferred to the Naval Reserve where he joined VR-872 – a Navel transport squadron out of the Alameda Naval Air Station that Michaan’s is located on now.  He and his wife, Paris, loved to travel and made it a point to travel to Paris twice a year, and always brought back beautiful and interesting items.   His collection covers the spectrum from noted painters to precise metal aircraft and automobile models.  Michaan’s is honored to be offering this collection over the next four months.  The September collection includes artists Greg Gandy, Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau, Giulio Rosati, and Marcel Brunery to name a few.  Along with a variety of Empire and Empire Style Gilt Bronze Figural clocks, period military helmets, marble busts, bronze and gilt brass urns, and complex models of military ships and aircraft.
