Korean Coin Chest (Ton-Kwe), Late 19th Century
Of low, rectangular form, the chest constructed from thick wooden panels, likely elm or pine, the exterior with a warm-toned grain and reinforced with hand-forged iron mounts, corner brackets, and a central lock plate of simple geometric design. The hinged lid opening from the top to reveal an interior lined with calligraphic manuscript pages, possibly later additions, creating a visual contrast between the austere, functional exterior and the literati-inspired interior decoration. Korean coin chests (돈궤, Ton-Kwe) were designed for the secure storage of valuables and are noted for their sturdy construction, restrained ornamentation, and emphasis on durability, with iron fittings serving both structural and decorative purposes.
