John A. Ellis Renaissance Revival Marquetry Library Table, shaped rectangular ebonized frame, over shaped stretcher, with gilt metal bosses to skirt, and legs, the top inset with a fine marquetry design featuring mother of pearl, of lute and horn, with beehive and arrow, within elaborate floral and foliate surround, the double banded border of shaped brackets, with a butterfly in each corner of the oblong sides, and with floral bouquets to the rounded shorter ends. Label to underside, "JOHN A. ELLIS MANUFACTURER OF ALL KINDS OF FIRST CLASS FURNITURE GORE STREET BETW 5th and 6th Sts. EAST CAMBRIDGE." Circa 1865 - 1870.
The firm of John A. Ellis (1822 (?) - 1869) was located in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, as early as 1850. Ellis's firm was remarkably successful and expanded to include at least one hundred works. The company made furniture for the Vermont State House, and private homes of individuals in the Back Bay of Boston, Massachusetts and Vermont; its prestigious offerings eventually expanded into home decor. This table no doubt made to offer reasonable competition with the furniture of Herter Brothers of New York.
{Approximate dimensions: 28 1/2" H. x 49 1/4" W. x 32" D.}.
Top with several gouges, scratches, stains, one 1/2" section of trim to top absent; minor repairs to parquetry. Patination to metal mounts. One section of stretcher loose. Short gouge to center front at skirt. Surface wear, light nicks and scratches.
