Japanese Hardwood Modular Kaidan Tansu (Step Chest), late 19th–early 20th century.

The cabinet is constructed in three interlocking sections, forming a stepped silhouette, each section fitted with drawers and sliding-panel compartments. The lowest section, of square form, is fitted with four drawers below and a larger upper compartment with sliding doors, providing ample storage. Above are two graduated step-form sections, each incorporating a combination of smaller drawers and a central sliding-door compartment, creating a balanced and highly functional arrangement. The warm-toned hardwood is finely finished, showcasing the natural grain, and is complemented by simple metal pulls. The modular design reflects both practical versatility and the distinctive architectural aesthetic associated with Japanese kaidan tansu, originally conceived for use in traditional interiors as both storage and stair access.

{Approximate dimensions: Largest section: H 36 1/4 inches x W 36 1/4 inches x D 17 5/8 inches (92.1 x 92.1 x 44.8 cm); Upper sections: H 27 1/8 inches x W 17 5/8 inches x D 27 3/4 inches (68.9 x 44.8 x 70.5 cm)}
