Chinese Famille Rose Red Ground 'One Hundred Children' Bowl

Republic Period, bearing a Jiaqing mark

Finely decorated in famille rose enamels on a rich iron-red ground, the bowl is painted both inside and out with lively scenes of boys engaged in various festive and recreational activities. The figures are depicted wearing brightly colored garments and arranged in animated groups, creating a sense of movement and celebration throughout the composition. The base bears a six-character Jiaqing reign mark.

The decorative theme, known as Baizi Tu ("One Hundred Children"), has long occupied an important place in Chinese visual culture. Popular from the Ming and Qing dynasties onward, the motif symbolizes fertility, prosperity, familial harmony, and the continuation of the family lineage. The image of numerous healthy and joyful children reflected traditional aspirations for abundant descendants and domestic happiness.

This example displays finely executed enameling, vivid coloration, and carefully rendered figural decoration. The brilliant red ground provides a striking contrast to the colorful figures, enhancing the festive character of the design. Combining auspicious symbolism with skilled ceramic craftsmanship, the bowl represents a popular decorative tradition that remained highly appreciated into the Republican period.

{H 3 1/2 x Diameter 5 inches (8.8 x 12.7 cm)}.
