Attributed to Zhang Daqian (1899–1983), Bird Painting in the Manner of Bada Shanren (1626-1705).

Ink on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll.

The painting executed in ink on paper, depicting a bird perched upon a fruit, rendered in a spontaneous and expressive manner. The composition is minimal yet dynamic, with bold brushstrokes defining the bird's form and softer washes suggesting the rounded fruit beneath. The work reflects study after Bada Shanren, emphasizing a balance between controlled brushwork and intentional simplicity. The inscription reads: "This work studies Bada; if the brushwork is overly refined, it falls into the manner of Niu Shihui (1628-1707), whereas emphasis should be placed on simplicity and weight." Dated to an autumn day of the gengxu year (1970), painted at Wuting Lake, signed Yuanweng, and bearing two seals "Zhang Yuan" and "Daqian Jushi". An additional collector's seal reading "Wenshan xinshang (appreciated by Wenshan)," indicating it was formerly in the collection of the noted collector Wang Wenshan (王闻善), who maintained a close relationship with Zhang Daqian.

{Approximate dimensions: H 13 inches x W 9 inches (33 x 22.9 cm)}
