A Japanese Bronze Umbrella Stand, Meiji Period (1868–1912)

A Japanese bronze umbrella stand of tall cylindrical form, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). The body is finely cast in relief with continuous chrysanthemum blossoms, leafy scrolls, and dense floral ornament arranged within broad horizontal registers separated by plain bands. The upper register is decorated with a series of pointed arch-shaped panels enclosing scrolling floral motifs, while the lower border is encircled by a Greek key (key-fret) band. The surface retains a rich dark brown patina with areas of naturally developed verdigris, accentuating the depth and texture of the finely cast decoration. Combining traditional Japanese floral motifs with elegant decorative design, the piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and artistic sophistication of Meiji-period bronze work, when Japanese metalwork gained international recognition through world expositions and the flourishing export trade.

明治時代（1868–1912）の日本製青銅傘立て。背の高い円筒形をなし、胴部には菊花、葉文、密な花文装飾が高浮彫で表され、複数の広い横帯の中に整然と配され、素地の帯によって区切られている。上部には尖頭アーチ形の区画が連続し、その内部に唐草文を配し、下部には雷文帯が巡らされている。表面には深みのある暗褐色の古色があり、所々に自然に生じた緑青が見られ、精緻な鋳造装飾の奥行きと質感を引き立てている。日本伝統の菊花文様と優雅な装飾意匠を融合した本作は、万国博覧会や輸出貿易を通じて日本金工が国際的評価を得た明治時代の、洗練された工芸技術と芸術性をよく示している。
