A Japanese Bamboo Carving of a Shishi among Peonies
Edo Period (1603-1868)

Carved with an open-mouthed shishi emerging among luxuriant peonies, this sculpture combines a lively expression with densely layered floral decoration. Deeply cut, curling lines articulate the eyebrows, whiskers, and flowing mane, while overlapping petals and veined leaves envelop the animal's body. The contrast between the rhythmic curls of the fur and the angular foliage gives the compact composition movement and sculptural depth.

The pairing of shishi and peonies is a traditional auspicious theme in Japanese art. The Buddhist lion represents power and protection, while the peony signifies wealth and good fortune. Their association brings together the preeminent animal and flower in a harmonious expression of strength and prosperity.

{Height 11 inches (27.9 cm)}.

Provenance: From the collection of a distinguished Japanese collector in San Jose, California, whose life included travels in Manchuria during the 1930s and incarceration in a U.S. internment camp following the attack on Pearl Harbor. These works bear witness to a precious family history and to the conviction and courage needed to preserve cultural heritage through adversity. Upon receiving the family's photographs, newspaper articles, and archival materials, Michaan's Auctions was deeply moved by their thoughtful preservation and enduring respect for history, culture, and art. We are honored to present treasures from this family collection.
