Ogata Gekko (1859-1920)
Luffa
Ink and color on silk, hanging scroll
Inscription: Gekko.
{Image size: 45 x 14 3/4 inches (114.3 x 37.5 cm)}.
{Overall size: 75 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches (191.8 x 50.2 cm)}.
Long luffa gourds hang from a climbing vine, surrounded by broad leaves, delicate tendrils, and small blossoms. The elongated fruits give the composition a strong vertical rhythm, while curling stems and angular leaves introduce movement. Restrained green and brown washes describe the gourds and foliage, with fine lines articulating their ribbed surfaces. The open ground lends an ordinary garden subject a quiet, spacious presence.
Ogata Gekko was a largely self-taught Japanese painter, illustrator, and designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. His work combined close observation with a painterly handling of line and color, bringing elements of nihonga into the print tradition. He gained recognition at international exhibitions, including those in Chicago in 1893 and St. Louis in 1904.
The present painting reflects Gekko's sensitivity to natural forms. Fine linear detail contrasts with softly washed leaves, balancing botanical observation with decorative grace. Its modest subject invites sustained attention to the shapes, textures, and rhythms of everyday nature.
This painting will be published in Time Well Wasted: Five Hundred Years of Japanese Ink Painting, by Jingwei Zeng, published by Michaan's Auctions and Center for Asian Arts.
