A Calligraphic Scroll by Zhu Ziqing (1898–1948), Dedicated to Li Jianwu
Ink on paper, inscribed with the three-character studio name “Xuezuilou” (雪醉楼), the studio name of the celebrated writer, dramatist, translator, and literary critic Li Jianwu (1906–1982). The work bears the inscription “Jianwu shuzheng” (健吾属正, “Respectfully presented to Jianwu for his correction”), is signed “Zhu Ziqing,” and dated to the Jiaping month of the Renwu year (the twelfth lunar month of 1942). Executed in expressive semi-cursive script, the calligraphy reflects Zhu Ziqing's refined literati style, characterized by restrained elegance, balanced composition, and quiet intellectual vigor. More than a presentation inscription, it is an important document recording one of the most influential teacher-student relationships in modern Chinese literary history.
Li Jianwu entered the collegiate division of Tsinghua School in 1925, initially enrolling in the Department of Chinese Literature. Zhu Ziqing quickly recognized his literary talent and encouraged him to transfer to the Department of Western Literature, a decision that profoundly shaped Li's later career as one of China's foremost novelists, playwrights, translators, and literary critics. Their relationship subsequently developed into a lifelong friendship founded upon mutual admiration and intellectual exchange.
The present inscription gains additional significance when considered alongside Zhu Ziqing's celebrated 1928 essay, To the Author of A Soldier and His Wife—Mr. Li Jianwu. Although ostensibly a review of Li Jianwu's novel, the essay has long been regarded as a masterpiece of modern Chinese prose in its own right. Rather than assuming the detached voice of a literary critic, Zhu deliberately adopted the language and perspective of the novel's protagonist, transforming literary criticism itself into an act of literary creation. Through this innovative approach, he praised Li Jianwu's extraordinary gift for character development and admired the vitality, authenticity, and economy of his dialogue, remarking that every sentence struck with the force of "an axe blow." He further observed that the protagonist was not merely a realistic soldier, but an artistic ideal shaped by the author's own moral imagination. While candidly noting one minor weakness in the novel's conclusion, Zhu concluded with his famous assessment: "Except for one point, Jianwu, I dare say this book has no faults."
This calligraphy therefore represents far more than a personal dedication. It embodies Zhu Ziqing's enduring encouragement of his gifted student and stands as a tangible testament to an important literary friendship that helped shape modern Chinese literature. Combining the artistic merit of Zhu Ziqing's calligraphy with exceptional literary and historical associations, the work possesses considerable scholarly, cultural, and documentary significance.
