These companion paintings interpret Su Shi (1037-1101)'s celebrated Former and Latter Red Cliff Rhapsodies, bringing together landscape, literature, and calligraphy. Towering cliffs rise above quiet water, while the moon and small boats carrying Su Shi and his companions establish the poetic setting. The contrast between monumental rock formations and the tiny human figures conveys both the grandeur of nature and the intimacy of a gathering among friends.

The landscapes unfold through delicate ink textures and restrained touches of color. Trees cling to rocky ledges, distant cliffs dissolve into pale washes, and broad stretches of unpainted silk suggest water, mist, and night air. The compositions are closely related yet varied, allowing the eye to move between their different arrangements of cliffs, vegetation, and open space. Their refined, subdued atmosphere invites the viewer to imagine wind through the pines and the distant cries of monkeys.

The calligraphy is integral to this poetic experience. Excerpts from the two rhapsodies accompany the landscapes in a fluid blend of running and regular script. The measured spacing and lively brush rhythm complement the finely worked scenery. The writing recalls the discipline and supple movement of Zhiyong's Thousand Character Classic, suggesting the enduring importance of Chinese calligraphic models in Japanese literati art. This affinity belongs to the wider history of cultural exchange in which Yang Shoujing (1839-1915)'s transmission of calligraphy exemplars to Japan played an important role.

Painted in the spring of 1911, the pair has been preserved in good overall condition for more than a century and remains accompanied by a wood storage box inscribed by the artist. The dated inscription inside the lid corresponds with those on the paintings, linking the box and scrolls as a coherent ensemble. Their survival together adds particular interest to the work, preserving both its literary conception and the care with which it has been kept.

These paintings will be published in Time Well Wasted: Five Hundred Years of Japanese Ink Painting, by Jingwei Zeng, published by Michaan's Auctions and Center for Asian Arts.

Provenance: From an important private collection in Berkeley, California.

本作は、Jingwei Zeng(曾経緯)著 Time Well Wasted: Five Hundred Years of Japanese Ink Painting Michaan's Auctions および Center for Asian Arts 刊行予定。

本对幅即将出版于曾经纬著 Time Well Wasted: 日本水墨五百年,由 Michaan's Auctions 和 Center for Asian Arts 出版。
