This work is from a group of five William Keith paintings that belonged to an old San Francisco family since the early 20th century. The paintings’ original owner had traveled extensively in Europe as a young man, touring museums and building his artistic knowledge. He treasured these paintings, and after he passed away suddenly in 1920s, his widow gifted the paintings to their adult son as family heirlooms.
The paintings were moved from San Francisco to the son’s Hillsborough estate in the 1920’s where they have remained until the most recent owner of the paintings and the family home passed away.
