Woodblock Print by Utagawa Yoshitsuna (Japanese, active ca. 1840s–1860s), View of Edo Showing Fire Brigade, 1852, published by Tsutaya Kichizō, depicting Edo-period civil fire brigades (hikeshi) carrying matoi standards in an action-filled scene, likely representing the New Year Dezomeshiki parade, during which competing brigades demonstrated strength and agility, reflecting the celebrated yet formidable reputation of Edo firemen.

Japanese cities of the period were highly susceptible to fire, as buildings were primarily constructed of wood and paper. Fire brigades not only extinguished flames but also strategically dismantled structures in the fire's path to prevent further spread, a practice echoed in the dynamic energy and urgency of such scenes. The matoi standards, emblematic of individual brigades, served both as identifiers and as symbols of prestige, often displayed prominently in ceremonial contexts.

The composition is notable for its unusually large format for a single-sheet woodblock print, approaching the scale of a horizontal triptych and enhancing both its visual impact and narrative density.

The composition is notable for its large scale, approaching that of a horizontal triptych and enhancing both its visual impact and narrative clarity. The present work consists of three sheets joined together as a continuous composition, consistent with comparable examples, including one in the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Well-preserved, complete impressions such as this remain particularly desirable.
