Two Indonesian Painted and Gilt Wooden Wedding Chests, Palembang, Sumatra, early 20th Century

Each rectangular chest fitted with two short drawers above a long drawer, the fronts elaborately carved in openwork with flowering vines and foliate scrolls accented in gilt, enclosed within key-fret borders and raised on carved bases. According to the accompanying account from the collector, these ceremonial wedding chests were traditionally found in the homes of wealthy families in Palembang, Sumatra, where they served as "hope chests" for storing treasured possessions associated with marriage. The collector further noted that the chests retain hand-forged nails and carved lower aprons characteristic of traditional craftsmanship from the region.

The smaller: Height 21 1/8 in. (53.7 cm); Width 35 1/4 in. (89.5 cm); Depth 17 in. (43.2 cm).

印度尼西亚巨港彩绘描金木婚箱一对，苏门答腊，二十世纪初

长方形木制婚箱一对，每件均设双小抽屉及一长抽屉，抽屉正面透雕花卉藤蔓纹，局部描金，并饰回纹边框，下承雕花底座。根据收藏者记述，此类礼仪婚箱传统上见于印度尼西亚苏门答腊巨港地区富裕家族宅邸，用作婚嫁时收藏贵重衣物及珍贵物品的“嫁妆箱（hope chest）”。收藏者并指出，此对婚箱仍保留手工锻制铁钉及雕刻底座等传统地方工艺特征。
