Two Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Flower Pots and Covers
Qing Dynasty, 19th Century

This finely matched pair of famille rose porcelain flower pots is of unusual hexagonal form, each rising from a tapering foot to a broad, waisted body surmounted by a pierced cover. The bodies are richly decorated in polychrome enamels and gilding, with alternating cartouches depicting elegant court ladies gathered within garden pavilions and terraces, interspersed with floral compositions featuring exotic birds amid blossoming branches. Elaborate molded and applied floral ornament covers much of the surface, creating a luxurious three-dimensional effect rarely encountered in standard porcelain production.

The pierced covers suggest that the vessels were intended as decorative flower holders or bulb pots, allowing stems or branches to be arranged through the openings. Twisted side handles further enhance the architectural appearance of the vessels and reflect the elaborate decorative taste that characterized high-quality export and domestic luxury porcelains of the nineteenth century.

Particularly noteworthy is the richness of the decoration. The figural scenes are executed in the refined famille rose palette, with graceful female figures rendered in brightly colored robes within carefully detailed garden settings. Such scenes belong to the longstanding Chinese tradition of depicting cultured women engaged in refined pursuits, a popular decorative theme during the Qing dynasty. The surrounding floral panels and birds contribute additional auspicious symbolism, conveying prosperity, beauty, harmony, and abundance.

The applied floral decoration demonstrates considerable technical skill, requiring separate molding and careful attachment before firing. Combined with extensive gilding and vibrant enamels, the overall effect is one of remarkable visual richness and complexity. Objects of this type were intended to be viewed from all sides and served as impressive display pieces in elite domestic interiors.

Combining unusual form, intricate molded ornament, finely painted figural scenes, and excellent decorative quality, this pair represents an attractive example of nineteenth-century Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain.
