Two Chinese Carved and Painted Seated Wood Figures.

The figures carved in the round and seated in frontal pose, each wearing layered robes with traces of original polychrome decoration. The larger figure is modeled with a dignified expression and formal posture, the garments falling in rhythmic folds, with remnants of painted surface and gilding visible throughout. The smaller figure, inscribed on the reverse “临水夫人” (Lady Linshui), represents Chen Jinggu, a protective goddess associated with women, children, and childbirth. She is depicted seated in composed posture, her robe similarly detailed with carved folds and traces of pigment. The surfaces of both figures show age-related wear, including areas of loss to the painted decoration and natural patina to the wood.

{Approximate dimensions: Larger figure: H 10 inches (25.4 cm); Smaller figure: H 8 3/4 inches (22.2 cm)}

Condition: The larger figure exhibits losses to gilding and pigment on the robes, a missing attribute from the right hand, minor cracks to the head and base, and a small loss to the mouth; the smaller figure shows dark spotting to the face, damage to the hair bun, a crack to the wood behind the right ear, and additional cracking below the garment. For additional information, please contact the Asian Art Department.
