Three Qing Vernacular Paintings, 19th century, depicting sequential scenes from a popular folkloric or theatrical narrative, rendered in the lively and expressive manner characteristic of late imperial folk painting. The first scene shows a woman addressing attendants from an elevated terrace, while below a group of men carrying a banner moves through a hilly landscape amid stylized cloud forms, suggesting the beginning of a journey or official action. The second scene presents a dynamic moment of travel and supernatural transformation, with an elderly figure and companions riding through mountainous terrain, while a female figure conjures a sword from swirling vapors, introducing a magical or martial element into the narrative. The third scene shifts to an interior setting, where a winged mythical beast descends amid clouds before human figures, marking a dramatic moment of spirit manifestation or otherworldly intrusion.
The compositions, characterized by bold outlines, simplified figures, and flattened spatial perspective, reflect the influence of vernacular storytelling, theatrical performance, and illustrated fiction of the Ming and Qing periods. The imagery conveys the imaginative and often uncanny themes found in zhiguai (tales of the strange) and popular novels, in which human, supernatural, and martial elements intertwine. These works serve as direct visual expressions of late imperial narrative culture. The paintings remain in good condition, with strong color and well-preserved line work. {Each image sight: 14 x 12 3/8 inches, frame size: 25 x 23 inches}.
Each work in fair to good condition, areas of discoloration and losses. For condition report, please contact the Asian Art Department.
