Three Japanese Woodblock Prints: Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849), later impression, The Great Wave; Benji Asada (Japanese, 1900–1984), Kiyomizu Pagoda; Gizan Izuno (Japanese, 1885–1957), Nanga.
This group reflects the continuity and reinterpretation of Japanese printmaking traditions from the Edo period through the modern era. The Great Wave, issued as a later impression after Hokusai's iconic design, demonstrates the lasting global influence of ukiyo-e through its bold composition and rhythmic depiction of nature. Asada's Kiyomizu Pagoda presents a tranquil Kyoto scene rendered with a modern sensibility, emphasizing atmosphere and architectural presence. Izuno's Nanga evokes the literati painting tradition, translating expressive brushwork and poetic landscape ideals into the woodblock medium.
Together, the three works illustrate the dialogue between tradition and modernity in Japanese art, highlighting how classical imagery and aesthetic principles were continually reinterpreted for new audiences.
