Three Woodblock Watercolor Prints by Duoyunxuan (朵云轩), 1950s, comprising Rooster and Taro Leaves (白石悲鸿合作雄鸡芋叶) after Qi Baishi and Xu Beihong, Self-Mockery (自嘲) after Lu Xun’s calligraphy, and Yang Sheng-yung’s Ou Yang-hai Risking His Life to Save the Train, each executed in the refined tradition of Chinese woodblock water printing (木版水印). The work Rooster and Taro Leaves retains its original label, dated February 1959, published and printed by Duoyunxuan, with distribution by Rongbaozhai.

Duoyunxuan woodblock water printing represents one of the highest achievements of 20th-century Chinese printmaking, integrating painting, carving, and printing into a sophisticated process of artistic reproduction. A key feature of this technique is douban (饾版), a multi-block color printing method in which separate carved blocks are used to apply layered colors, allowing for subtle tonal gradations and painterly effects that closely resemble original ink works. Rooted in the ancient tradition of woodblock printing, Duoyunxuan developed a distinctive style characterized by refined materials, delicacy of execution, and elegant tonal harmony, forming, together with Rongbaozhai, the two major schools of modern Chinese woodblock printing.

These works demonstrate the remarkable ability of woodblock water printing to capture the spirit, brushwork, and ink resonance of the originals with exceptional fidelity. As a group, they exemplify both the artistic sophistication and cultural significance of this medium, serving as important vehicles for the preservation and dissemination of Chinese artistic heritage. Well-preserved, with strong impressions and refined color throughout. {Image sizes: 38 1/4 x 18 1/8 inches; 50 1/8 x 11 7/8 inches; 39 x 21 1/2 inches}.
