Peter Rainier was born in 1784 and entered the Navy in 1798, soon serving as a junior officer under his uncle Admiral Peter Rainier, commander-in-chief in the East Indies. Rainier was promoted to captain in 1806 and commanded several vessels in numerous campaigns from the Indian to Atlantic oceans. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1815 and appointed naval aide-de-camp to King William IV in 1830. He died at Southampton in 1836.
