Takahashi Shōtei (Hiroaki) (1871–1945)
Tsuki no Yoru (Starlit Night)
Published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, circa 1930s

Woodblock print, signed with the artist's gourd-shaped red seal Shōtei, mounted on card.

This atmospheric nocturnal landscape is a superb example of Takahashi Shōtei's ability to evoke mood through simplicity and restraint. Beneath a deep indigo sky scattered with stars, a small rural village emerges from darkness. Warm light glows from the windows of traditional thatched houses, while reflections shimmer gently across the still water in the foreground. The contrast between the cool darkness of the landscape and the soft illumination of the dwellings creates a powerful sense of tranquility and quiet human presence.

Shōtei was among the earliest artists associated with the shin-hanga movement and one of the most successful collaborators of the celebrated publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. Unlike many shin-hanga artists who concentrated on famous landscapes and scenic views, Shōtei often focused on intimate corners of rural Japan, capturing the poetry of everyday life through changing weather, seasons, and light conditions. His finest works possess a remarkable emotional subtlety, transforming ordinary subjects into scenes of quiet contemplation.

The present print demonstrates the artist's mastery of night effects. The silhouettes of bare trees and farmhouses are rendered with minimal detail, allowing darkness itself to become an active compositional element. Tiny illuminated windows serve as focal points, suggesting domestic warmth within the vast stillness of the evening landscape. The reflection of moonlight and lamplight upon the water further enhances the print's lyrical and dreamlike atmosphere.

Produced during the 1930s by Watanabe Shōzaburō, the most influential publisher of the shin-hanga movement, this work reflects the high standards of carving and printing that made Watanabe's editions famous throughout the world. The subtle gradations of blue and black, together with the delicate treatment of reflected light, demonstrate the technical sophistication of modern Japanese woodblock printing at its finest.

Today, Shōtei's night scenes rank among his most sought-after compositions. Combining poetic atmosphere, technical refinement, and profound emotional resonance, Tsuki no Yoru (Starlit Night) remains an outstanding example of early twentieth-century Japanese printmaking.
