Set of Three Japanese Tansu Storage Chests, Meiji to Taishō period (late 19th–early 20th century), comprising a central multi-drawer isho-dansu flanked by two smaller side cabinets with hinged doors. Constructed in hardwood and fitted with extensive brass hardware including corner mounts, hinges, and lock plates, the set reflects the robust craftsmanship and functional elegance of traditional Japanese domestic furniture.
The two side cabinets open to reveal additional interior drawers, providing compartmentalized storage. The relatively compact scale suggests use for folded garments, textiles, and personal effects—such as kimono accessories—rather than large clothing, consistent with traditional Japanese storage practices. The symmetrical arrangement indicates it may have formed part of a bridal trousseau, combining practical utility with a display of household refinement.
Center chest: 35 x 20 3/8 x 14 1/2 inches;
Side cabinets: 23 1/2 x 21 1/4 x 14 inches (each).
