Paul Jacoulet (French, 1902-1960), "Le Remplacant, Mongole," (The Substitute, Mongol), 1955, color woodcut with colored mica, silver and bronze, and gauffrage (embossment) and urushi (lacquer) on wove Japanese paper. Watermark of artist's initial and kanji at lower left. Numbered 24/350 stamped in red lower left verso. Signed in pencil with peony's seal at center right. Seals of the carver, Kentaro Maeda; printer, Tetsunosuke Honda; and titled at lower right corner. Sheet has kento notch at lower right.[Approximate dimensions - plate: 15 1/2" H x 11 7/8" W, sheet: 18 3/4" H x 14 1/8" W]. Reference: Miles 142. "The model, a Chinese girl who was living in Seoul, recently lost a baby. Her pet rabbit was a poor substitute, but it gave Jacoulet an idea for an image that has grown steadily more popular since his death. The young lady also was the inspiration for 'Les Jades' (No. 63), the original painting for which was done at the same period as 'Le Remplacant'. There is no evidence that Jacoulet completed any paintings in the last five years of his life, so engrossed was he in preparing an ambitious new series of woodblock prints."
