Pair of Chinese Elmwood Horseshoe Armchairs

18th Century

A pair of Chinese elmwood horseshoe armchairs (quanyi), each with a continuous rounded crest rail gracefully curving into outward-scrolling arms. The broad rectangular backsplat is carved in low relief with an interlocking key-fret (guaizi) motif and fitted between elegantly curved side supports. Each chair retains its original woven cane seat set within a rectangular frame. The square-section legs are joined by stretchers on all four sides, providing strength and stability. Well proportioned and finely constructed, the pair exemplifies the restrained elegance, harmonious proportions, and refined craftsmanship characteristic of eighteenth-century Chinese furniture.

一对中国榆木圈椅，搭脑与扶手一木连作，形成圆润流畅的弧形，两端自然向外回卷。宽大的长方形靠板浅浮雕拐子纹，嵌设于弯曲联帮棍之间，纹饰古朴典雅。座面镶原编藤席，置于长方形座框之内。四腿方材，下承四面步步高赶枨，结构坚固稳健。整体比例匀称，线条流畅，制作考究，充分体现了十八世纪中国古典家具含蓄典雅、简练隽永的艺术风格。

每件：高38英寸，宽23 3/8英寸，深18 3/8英寸（约96.5 × 59.3 × 46.6厘米）。
